In memory of Geoff Freeth
23rd February 1969 - 30th May 2014
Geoff was a passionate vet, and a big personality and we miss him greatly. He was an enormously talented surgeon and loved the challenge of difficult cases that would normally be referred to specialist surgeons in Sydney. He had a brilliant mind, and not content with a Master’s Degree, he was constantly studying and furthering his extraordinary knowledge, both general and veterinary.
Geoff grew up around Goulburn and Oberon, where his family had sheep and beef cattle properties. He spent his teenage years working in shearing sheds, helping out at dog trials, mucking around with horses and playing cricket.
In 1991, Geoff graduated from Veterinary Science at Sydney University, with first class honours.
After graduating, Geoff moved to Cowra to work in a mixed practice, working mainly with large animals, in particular horse stud work. The late nights involved in such work, along with his growing family, led him to develop an interest in small animal surgery.
Moving to Orange allowed Geoff to develop a larger surgical caseload through referrals from other practices in the district. Always striving to further develop his skills and knowledge, Geoff completed a Masters degree in Veterinary Studies from Murdoch University in Perth, post graduate courses in emergency, critical care and surgery, and was working towards a second Masters degree – a Master of Veterinary Surgery through Massey University in New Zealand.
Passionate about ensuring that his clients and their beloved pets received the best care possible, it was important to Geoff that they also felt like a part of his family. Anyone who crossed his path, would appreciate his wicked sense of humour (not always funny, but he tried!) and his unique turn of phrase.
Geoff mentored and inspired many students, nurses, and young vets in his 16 years at Canobolas Family Pet Hospital and was tremendously generous and encouraging with his time and knowledge.
Geoff’s main motivator and love in life, other than being a Vet was his four sons Lewis, Oliver, William and Arthur. Geoff took great pride in their varied interests and successes and strived to encourage them to achieve the very best they possibly could in their pursuits of sport, music and academia as well as general goals in life. All the boys have inherited Geoff’s endearing qualities, they are gentleman, kind hearted and extremely talented and they made Geoff glow with pride every single hour of the day.
