If your dog is itchy Lisa Brisbane is running allergy clinics every Friday afternoon. The aim is to stop itchy dogs scratching without the use of drugs through identifying the allergy and modifying the immune response. If your dog is itchy you don't just have to throw drugs at the problem. A free allergy assessment is availible for November.

The Central Western Daily featured the tragic case of Merlo the Labrador who picked up a bait while visiting a reserve. It is a timely warning as landholder bait foxes for spring lambing. 1080 almost invariably fatal to dogs and is widely used.

Signs of arthritis are stiffness after rest, difficulty rising, sitting with a straight hindleg, licking a joint, swelling over the joints and decreased exercise tolerance. Dogs don't cry out or wimper as people expect them to do. If you dog has any of the signs of arthritis bring them in for a free xray to assess the degree of arthritis.

Our free over 7 year old health check has been a real hit. Originally we offered free health checks for the month of September - September being senior pet month. We extended it to October and we are pleased to announce we will keep doing them until the end of the year, such has been the demand.

After a long cold winter, spring time brings an assortment of dangers for our pets, say the vets at Canobolas Pet Hospital. Springtime is cat breeding season which means many cats are roaming, finding new territory and fighting for it. For dogs, the chances of poisonings, snakebite and death through trauma is much greater in spring.

Even desexed pet cats are at risk of territorial fights during spring as feral cats are on the hunt for mates. A consequence of a fight can be fatal. Feline AIDS is mostly spread through bite wounds. Infections from bites and scratches can turn into an abscess that will need surgery.

Warm weather brings out the gardener in many people and with that, some risks to our pets. Snailbait is rapidly fatal, is attractive for dogs to eat, and very commonly used and commonly a source of poisonings. Even the pet friendly snailbaits are potentially fatal. Cats are fastidious and so rarely eat snailbait but dogs love the taste and will eat a box full in no time.

If attended early, 90% of pets bitten by a snake can be saved with the use of antivenene. Spring is the time of the year that vets see the majority of pets bitten by snakes. Snakebite wounds are not obvious until the signs of envenomation start to show. First signs of snakebite are that the pet will look drowsy or drunk, the pupils are dilated, sometimes they'll vomit or collapse and sudden death is not uncommon.

Thunderstorm phobia is almost universal amongst dogs and while some will just hide as a thunderstorm approaches, others will be destructive or run off wildly. This is how a thunderstorm phobia can become fatal - when a dog has escaped from a backyard is hit by a car.

The vets at Canobolas Pet Hospital recommend:-

-           keeping cats inside at night  - which is when most territorial fights happen.

-          ensure that dogs are excluded from areas where snailbait is used and keep it in a safe place.

-          pet owners should be aware of the signs and the possibility of snakebite.

-          provide a safe and secure environment, like a dog crate, when thunderstorms are approaching so that your dog can't hurt itself or other animals, people or property.
