October 2011

The big news this month was the official launch of stem cell therapy with world reowned stem cell pioneer Associate Professor Ben Herbert from Macquarie University in town. Have a look at the news coverage on our stem cell page.
The question everyone asks is whether it available for people yet. The good news for people suffering arthritis is in the video at the very bottom of the link.

Niccole Perrizolo is back this month from maternity leave. We missed her smiling face around the place.

For the month of October we are offering free health checks for all dogs and cats over 7 years old. All of September we have had the same offer and it has been an overwhelming success.

We are starting a study into FIV (the cat form of AIDs) and we are offering a limited number of free FIV tests. Boehringer have given us a number of free tests after the incidence of FIV in Goulburn was found to be 24% and around 30% in Lithgow. We would like to know the true incidence in Orange. These figures go against the long held belief that the incidence of FIV is about 12% in most Australian cat populations. If you and your cat would like to be part of this study call us on 63626991 to book in.  Read more about FIV.

Lisa Brisbane is starting her allergy clinics just in the nick of time for the Spring itchy season. Firstly she finds out what your dog is allergic to then she makes up a vaccine against the problem allergen and the vaccine settles the over reacting immune system. Completely drug free, no side effects and effective in the majority of itchy animals because it treats the problem not just masks it with drugs.

Snakes continue to be a problem with several pets bitten in the last month. Signs of snake bite include sudden lethargy, wobbly gait - looking drunk, fainting, floppiness, and even sudden death. 92% of cats will be saved and 87% of dogs with antivenom. Have a look at the snake venom rankings.

Prom exercises

Prom exercises don't have anything to do with teenage dances in America. They are a very valuable method of maintaining a dog's joint health and range of motion. Prom stands for Passive Range Of Motion.

Very few dogs over 7 years of age escape without some arthritis in at least one of their joints. Prom exercises are excellent at decreasing pain in the arthritic joint.

They are particularly effective after joint surgery or orthopedic surgery and allow a faster recovery. This helps avoid what is called fracture disease, a condition where without use, an affected leg's muscles die back, localised osteoporosis occurs and joints become stiff.

Every dog over 7 years of age of those suffering from an orthopedic injury should have an owner who knows Prom exercises. Read more....

What do dogs see?

If you are lucky enough to have 20/20 vision then you have perfect eyesight. Dogs generally have 75/20 vision - what you might distinguish at 75 metres they have to be 20 metres away to see the same - ie they have worse vision then we do.
