Kylie is back
The familiar face of Kylie McDonald will be seen around the clinic more as she is coming back from maternity leave in August. Kylie has been with us for more than 14 years.

Puppy preschool

Our next puppy preschool class starts at the start of each month. This month we have had overwhelming demand but not quite enough to start a second class running concurrently. If you are interested please give us a call and we might have two classes. It is a great way to start your pup off on the right foot and at $80 for four weeks, well worth it.

TTO surgery

tto

This is the post-op xray of our first TTO (triple tibial osteotomy), an operation for dogs who have ruptured their cruciate ligament. Cruciate rupture is the most common cause of hindlimb lameness. This dog, a Ridgeback, was non-weight bearing on the leg when she came in but even after the extensive cutting and moving large parts of bone during the operation, she was using the leg 24 hours later.

ttodia

Three cuts are made to change the angle of the stifle (knee) joint. This stops the femor (thigh) bone moving backwards and helps the tendon attached to the knee cap hold the bone in place.

Traditional surgical methods for cruciate rupture have 50% of dogs still lame after the operation. One study of dogs receiving a TTO had 100% either excellent or very good on lameness scores on long term follow up. A TTO gives significantly better results over traditional methods of repair.

Dog food warning

Some well known dog food brands have been proven to have hundreds of times the sulfur dioxide content than they claim. Sulfur dioxide is used as a preservative but can cause vitamin deficiencies.

We have been saying for several years that many pet meats are not safe because of the preservative content. Source your pet meat/bones from someone who sources it from abbatoirs set up for human consumption. We are aware that March street pet foods does this, if there are any others we would like to know.

Clinic pets
sara
People often ask what pets we have.
Apart from the too many horses Geoff has and too many Greyhounds Kylie has, we all have a few furry friends in our life. The girls took some snaps recently when they had some of their pets in at the clinic.

Stem cells

Because we love them so much, because they grow new tissue and come from the animal's own tissues, here is some more on stem cells from a story channel ten news

..and another from the Sydney Morning Herald.

Just for fun

We found it funny. Hope you do too.

Horse stands in sprinkler

Hypoallergenic?
olddogLabradoodles were the first in a long line of 'doodle' type crossbred dogs and were sold as hypoallergenic because they shed less hair. Our favourite of which was the Great Dane cross Poodle which gives.. drum roll please.. a Great Doodle.

As Geoff said on ABC radio 549am, recently '..just because they don't shed much hair why does that make them less likely to cause allergies?' At the time he didn't have the answer but this article from some human doctors here is the answer...

Hendra update

Well the latest is that Hendra virus, the fatal bug spread from fruit bats via horses to people, has been found in a dog.

We don't think there is any cause for alarm in this area at all. The dog in question is well and was on a farm which had confirmed cases of Hendra amongst the horses.

Of course we will keep an eye on it and keep everyone in Orange informed as things change.

For more information look at the Queensland DPI website.
