KENNEL COUGH

Kennel cough, or infectious tracheobronchitis, is a contagious disease of the upper respiratory tract, which includes the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (large air passages of the lungs).  Viruses and bacteria are usually involved.  The most common virus involved in kennel cough is Parainfluenza and the most common bacteria is Bordetella.  Sometimes other viruses or bacteria may cause kennel cough.

The most common sign of kennel cough is a harsh, dry cough that is often followed by gagging and coughing up foamy mucous.  Owners often feel that their dog has something caught in the throat.  Usually there is a history that the animal has been boarding or in contact with other dogs showing similar signs. The disease spreads rapidly from one dog to another, but it does not affect people.  Symptoms usually appear in 3 to 10 days after the dog contracts the disease.

Generally animals affected with kennel cough remain alert and generally healthy.  Occasionally they will be off their food for a day or so.  The disease is usually self-limiting.  This means that, unless complications (such as pneumonia) occur, the signs usually disappear in 1 to 3 weeks.  Sometimes antibiotics and/or a cough mixture are prescribed to aid a speedier recovery.

Dogs affected with kennel cough do not require any special diets.  As exercise stimulates coughing, animals should be restricted till they recover.  Sudden changes in air temperature or pressure on the neck from collars and leashes may also stimulate coughing and should be avoided if possible.

Your should contact your vet if your dog’s cough worsens or persists beyond 2 weeks, or if your dog becomes depressed or losses weight.

Vaccines are available to protect against kennel cough.  A C5 vaccination gives protection against both Parainfluenza and Bordetella components of the disease, along with parvo, distemper and hepatitis.  After the initial puppy course of vaccination, booster needles are given yearly to maintain immunity.  All boarding kennels require up to date vaccinations before they will allow animals to visit.

Occasionally some dogs will still contract kennel cough after visiting a boarding facility.  In this circumstance the disease is being caused by another virus or bacteria for which a vaccination has not been developed yet.

Should you have any further questions regarding kennel cough or your pet’s health please contact your vet at Canobolas Family Pet Hospital on 6362-6991.
